How To Increase Your Chances Of Getting A Job
Many people can find it difficult to enter the job market, particularly in the current economic climate when fewer employers are hiring and vacancies are continuing to fall. That’s why these tips could help you find the job you’ve been looking for and increase your chances of getting it.
Pitch yourself for a new job
According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of vacancies between December 2022 and February 2023 dropped by 51,000 from the preceding three months, which is the eighth consecutive quarter of falling numbers.
This just shows how businesses are not actively recruiting as much as they used to, as they tighten their belts in the cost-of-living crisis. However, they may be tempted to hire if they discover someone they just have to have.
So, don’t be afraid to approach companies yourself even if they are not advertising.
Miranda Kyte from Glassdoor told the BBC: “Utilise your network, let friends, ex-colleagues, family know that you’re looking for a new position.”
They can then refer you, look for internal job roles or pass on your name.
Look further afield
Thanks to the rise in remote working, office location is not as important as it used to be. Therefore, it is a good idea to look further afield for your next job, as you might be able to work from home a few days a week.
Focus on skills
If a job advertised asks for a certain number of years’ experience, don’t let this put you off, as you should focus on the skills you have instead.
Yvonne Smyth from hays stated: “It’s more important that a candidate has the right skills. Try to look for parallels and make that obvious in your application.”
